On October 14th, Jefferson Parish voters will be faced with an important decision to RENEW the existing Transit Millage that provides funding to 52% of operations and maintenance for JeT and 87% of operations and maintenance for MITS. Early voting will be held September 30 – October 7.
How are these funds dedicated?
6.5 mills will fund 97% of department operations and maintenance.
What will the funds cover?
Jefferson Transit (JeT)
41 fixed route vehicles, 13 routes (6 East Bank, 7 West Bank), vehicles used during disasters, providing transportation to all riders for evacuations
Mobility Impaired Transportation System (MITS)
Curb-to-curb and demand responsive, 17 paratransit vehicles, designed to meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
Why is this renewal needed?
Without the millage, no federal funds could be utilized for operating, capital, or planning.
Through grants, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), provides approximately $5.8 million of the transit budget. All FTA money must be matched with local funds, which for Jefferson Transit, is from the millages. The local match for FTA is 20% for most projects, but it is 50% for operating assistance.
